Wool bandanas

A merino wool knit, not a cotton square

Wool bandanas did not exist. Yet that was precisely what this accessory needed: a way to wear it beyond the warmer months. Our wool bandanas are knitted from merino wool in our workshops in the Pyrenees. A fine, soft, unisex knit available in thirteen plain colours, at the heart of our bandana collection. Wool changes both the drape and the way the bandana is worn. It ties softly, does not retain fold marks and provides warmth that fine cotton cannot offer. The bandana becomes an accessory for between seasons and then for winter.

Frequently asked questions

What are the characteristics of a wool bandana?

  • Warmth, first of all. A lightweight fabric bandana belongs to spring and summer. Knitted from merino wool, it genuinely protects the neck, making it suitable for between seasons and winter.
  • The drape, next. The knit drapes rather than folds: it follows the line of the neck or head without creating sharp angles and returns to its original shape once untied.
  • Softness, finally. Merino fibres are finer than conventional wool fibres and can be worn directly against the skin, at the neck as well as across the forehead. Our bandanas are made from 100% merino wool, without acrylic or blended fibres.

Merino wool, cashmere or wool and silk?

Wool bandanas are available on the market in several different compositions. Cashmere, sometimes blended with silk, is the most luxurious: larger designs often sell for between €100 and €265. Wool and silk gains shine but provides less warmth. Acrylic imitates wool at a lower price, without offering the same breathability.

We chose merino wool: fine enough to remain lightweight around the neck, warm enough for winter and more resistant to friction than cashmere.

When should you wear a wool bandana?

First, between seasons, when a scarf feels like too much but an open collar does not provide enough protection. This is when it proves most useful: enough fabric to keep out the chill, but not so much that you become too warm.

Then in winter, beneath a coat, where it keeps the neck warm without creating the volume of a snood or scarf.

And in the hair throughout the year, when only the colour matters.

How do you tie a wool bandana?

A knitted bandana requires a slightly different approach from a cotton square.

Do not try to create a sharp fold. Roll the material rather than folding it and allow it to settle naturally. Keep the knot loose so that the knit retains its volume without becoming distorted.

Around the neck, a simple knot at the side is enough. At 115 cm long, the Laina leaves two ends falling across the chest. In the hair, roll it into a band and tie it at the back or on top of the head, depending on whether you want to reveal the face or create greater coverage.

Which colour should you choose for a wool bandana?

Thirteen plain shades: black, dark grey, navy blue, Laulhère blue, sky blue, electric blue, botanical green, yellow, red, burgundy, pale pink, sand and light beige.

Muted shades such as sand, light beige and dark grey can be worn like a lightweight scarf. Vivid colours truly come into their own when worn in the hair.

How do you care for a wool bandana?

Do not machine-wash it, as the fine merino knit could lose its shape. Treat stains locally using a slightly damp sponge and a little mild soap, then leave the bandana to dry flat and away from direct sunlight.

Avoid storing it while knotted. Unfold it so the knit can return to its original shape and air it after every wear. For further advice on caring for knitwear, consult the merino wool section of our care guide.

Where can you buy a wool bandana?

On our website. It is the easiest piece in our knitwear collection to give as a gift: unisex, one size and unexpected enough to surprise. Pair it with a beanie in the same colour to create a complete set.
