Bandanas

In your hair, around your neck: wear it your way

The bandana is perhaps the most versatile accessory of all. There is no single way or place to wear it—and that is precisely the point. Ours are made in our workshops in France. Plain, unisex and available in a palette ranging from understated to vivid, they are knitted from an unexpected material: these are wool bandanas. While the classic bandana is a square of printed cotton, ours is knitted. It ties softly, drapes differently and provides warmth. A new way to wear an accessory you thought you knew.

Frequently asked questions

What are the different types of bandanas?

The bandana was originally a square of fabric—most often cotton—folded into a triangle before being tied. Its name is thought to derive from a Hindi word referring to a tie-dyeing technique. The paisley pattern, also known as the cashmere pattern, in red or blue, made it an emblematic accessory of the American cowboy and later of rock culture.

Today, there are three main types: the lightweight, affordable printed cotton square; the more refined silk bandana scarf; and the rarer knitted bandana, which provides warmth. A small bandana can be tied around the neck or wrist, while a larger one can be worn in a triangle over the shoulders. Each type has its own style, but they can all be worn in the same ways.

Ours belongs to the third category: a 115 × 42 cm rectangle, long enough to tie as a headband or around the neck.

How do you wear a bandana?

There are as many ways to wear one as there are moods, but four styles remain particularly popular.

  • As a rolled headband, folded over itself and tied at the back or side of the head. It holds the hair in place and reveals the face, creating a distinctly retro look.
  • Around the neck, tied at the front, side or nape. This is the most understated style, adding colour without creating bulk.
  • As a hair scarf, placed over the top of the head and tied beneath the hair. It provides greater coverage and works particularly well with long hair or an updo.
  • Around the wrist or the handle of a bag, when you are not wearing it but want to keep it close at hand.

One piece of advice applies to every style: do not pull it too tight. A bandana should sit naturally and be tied loosely rather than stretched.

Which bandana patterns and colours should you choose?

Paisley—often white against a red or blue background—remains the most popular pattern, followed by vintage, floral and graphic prints. Our bandanas take the opposite approach: a plain bandana is effortless to coordinate, allowing the colour to become the sole focus. Nothing more is needed.

Black, dark grey or navy blue slips easily into any look. A red, yellow or electric blue bandana draws the eye, particularly when worn in the hair, where the colour frames the face.

The same shades can be found across our beanies and snoods, allowing you to create a coordinated look from head to neck.

A bandana for women or men?

Both, without distinction. Our bandanas are unisex, and the way they are worn influences the overall look far more than the product itself.

A women’s bandana is often worn in the hair as a rolled headband or hair scarf, or tied closely around the neck with an open shirt. A men’s bandana is more often seen around the neck, tucked into the collar of a denim or casual jacket for a workwear-inspired look.

To complete the outfit, our mittens are available in women’s and men’s selections, in the same colour families.

How do you personalise a bandana?

A logo, name or date can be printed or embroidered onto a cotton square. With a knitted bandana, personalisation comes through the choices you make: the colour, the way you tie it and how you pair it with a beanie or beret in the same shade.

With thirteen colours available at the same price, it is also an easy gift to coordinate with the recipient’s wardrobe.
