SIZE GUIDE FOR BERET AND CAP

Why doesn't every beret come in the same size?

On our eshop, all our berets are unisex, and so are the sizes. Depending on their design and the materials used to produce them, sizes are managed differently. You'll find 3 types of berets and caps:

SIZE

These are borderless berets, generally made from wool, a material that is naturally stretchable, so they can be adapted to the vast majority of head sizes. Their diameter is suitable for most people, and can be easily stretched at home to get bigger if necessary.

If you have a head circumference less than 55 cm or more than 60 cm, we advise you to choose a suitable model from our range of sizes.

Please note: once stretched, the beret can no longer be shrunk.

SIZE

These berets generally have a stretchy grosgrain or leather band on the inside, and come in five sizes, from XS (extra small) to XL (extra large). They come in 5 sizes, from XS (extra small) to XL (extra large), to suit all head sizes thanks to the flexibility of the border. Note: if you're hesitating between 2 sizes, it's best to opt for the larger size to guarantee your comfort.

SIZE

For some models with leather bands, there are sizes corresponding to the exact head circumference in cm. These sizes range from 54 to 62 cm. To measure your head size correctly, please read our recommendations.

ONE SIZE (OS): these models are suitable for head circumferences between 55 and 60 cm (US: 6 7/8 to 7 ½)

How to measure your head circumference?

Head circumference is measured at forehead height, about 1-2 cm above the eyebrows, and at the bump at the back of the head.

If your measurements are between 2 sizes, take the biggest, your beret will be more comfortable to wear. To find our advice by model, please consult the model’s page.

What is the plate diameter of a beret?

Traditionally, a beret is measured according to 2 dimensions: its plate, also known as its "collar", i.e. the outside diameter of the beret when it lies flat, and its head circumference, i.e. the inside diameter of the beret opening.

"Bibi" or "commando" type beret

Bibis and commando berets sit very close to the head and are suitable for all face shapes.

Beret small plate 26 cm

Beret size recommended for thin faces or children.

Beret plate 28 cm

Beret size to suit all face shapes.

Beret large plate 32 cm

Beret size recommended for angular and round faces.

How do i stretch a one-size-fits-all beret?

Our one-size-fits-all berets, if they are made from merino wool, can be stretched thanks to the properties of merino wool and the elasticity of its fibres.

Urbasa is Maison Laulhère’s new interpretation of the beret: a soft knitted piece that blurs the lines between beanie and traditional headwear. With its soft texture, enveloping shape and natural drape, it combines the comfort of a beanie with the graphic flair of a beret. Knitted from 100% French merino wool, it keeps your head warm while remaining breathable. History

The Laulhère workshops are still located today on the exact spot where they were born in 1840, at the foot of the Bearnais Pyrenees, perched above the raging waters of the Gave d'Oloron. More than 180 years of history, tradition and expertise have gone into the making of the authentic Laulhère beret.

This French emblem has been worn by film stars, sportsmen, musicians and writers alike, and has travelled the world thanks to the intrepid sailors and explorers who set off from the Basque country. Our berets have bravely traversed the 20th century, travelling from the peasant to the worker, from the Parisian titi to the jazzman of the Latin Quarter, from the silent film starlet to the cigar-chomping revolutionary and the singer with millions of fans. Today more than ever, with all these intertwined stories, Laulhère berets represent an incredibly varied heritage that everyone can make their own to express their own style.

Maintenance

CLEANING

Machine or hand washing is not recommended in order to preserve the quality of the fibers (consult your dry-cleaning specialist if cleaning is absolutely necessary). In case of a small stain, gently blot with absorbent paper and use a natural sponge or a soft cloth slightly dampened with lukewarm soapy water. Avoid soaking the fabric and allow to dry flat at room temperature to prevent any distortion.

BRUSHING, DUST REMOVAL

To best protect your beanie and scarf, it is recommended to store them flat after each use, in a place protected from dust and humidity. Careful storage will preserve their softness and original shape.
