A tote bag is the kind of bag you do not need to plan. You put in what you need in the morning, add whatever comes along during the day, and it keeps up without ever looking too full or too empty. Our Noa tote bag is made from merino wool felt, with cowhide leather handles and fastenings. Unisex, available in several colours and made in our workshops in Béarn, it can be carried over the shoulder or by hand. This is the usual limitation of the design. A canvas tote collapses
as soon as it is put down, while a soft leather tote folds in on
itself, forcing you to rummage around for whatever you need.
Wool felt strikes the right balance. Dense and shaped from a single
piece, it retains its structure without a frame or rigid lining:
the bag remains open when set down and stands upright when placed
on the ground. You can see what is inside, which is more useful
than it might seem for a bag you open twenty times a day.
It can still be folded without creasing and returns to its original
shape. Flexibility, without compromising structure.
How much can a Laulhère tote bag hold?
The question works the opposite way around from what you might
expect. A tote bag is not chosen according to its capacity in
litres, but according to what you put inside without thinking:
a laptop and notebook on some days, shopping and a jumper on
others—and sometimes all of the above.
This is where a generous capacity comes into its own. A tote bag
that is too small forces you to decide what to leave behind in the
morning, while one that is too large fills up with unnecessary
items and loses its shape.
Ours was designed for the first situation: roomy enough to
accommodate whatever the day brings, yet structured enough not
to lose its shape and gape open like a basket.

The handles: over the shoulder or carried by hand
Everything depends on their length:
Short handles restrict the bag to being carried by hand and keep
it close to the body.
Long handles fit over the shoulder but allow the bag to hang low
and knock against you with every step.
The balance comes down to just a few centimetres.
Our tote bags are designed for both: long enough to fit over the
shoulder, even over a winter coat, yet short enough for the bag
to remain controlled when carried by hand. Cowhide leather plays
a specific role here: it does not stretch under the weight,
whereas handles made from fabric or felt alone would eventually
lengthen.
Tote bag or backpack: which should you choose?
It is more a question of pace than capacity. A tote bag can be set
down and picked up again in one easy movement. It suits days when
you settle somewhere—the office, a café terrace or a friend’s
home. You can reach inside without taking it off.
A
backpack,
such as the Charlie, distributes the weight across both shoulders
and leaves your hands free. It becomes the natural choice when you
need to walk for longer, cycle or travel from place to place.
Many of our customers own both and choose between them according
to the day ahead.
That said, this is not a travel bag and does not claim to be one:
it has no separate compartment, reinforced closure or cabin-sized
design. For an overnight stay, however, it does the job, with
enough space for a change of clothes, a wash bag and a laptop
without having to switch bags.
Felt is better suited to this use than canvas: the material does
not crease, does not retain the folds of a bag squeezed onto a
train and returns to its original shape once emptied.
A women’s or men’s tote bag?
Ours is unisex, with no difference in shape or handle length.
It can be carried over the shoulder or by hand, depending on
what you are doing and what you are wearing.
The colours determine its character: a black tote bag blends
