The bandana was originally a square of fabric—most often cotton—folded into a triangle before being tied. Its name is thought to derive from a Hindi word referring to a tie-dyeing technique. The paisley pattern, also known as the cashmere pattern, in red or blue, made it an emblematic accessory of the American cowboy and later of rock culture.
Today, there are three main types: the lightweight, affordable printed cotton square; the more refined silk bandana scarf; and the rarer knitted bandana, which provides warmth. A small bandana can be tied around the neck or wrist, while a larger one can be worn in a triangle over the shoulders. Each type has its own style, but they can all be worn in the same ways.
Ours belongs to the third category: a 115 × 42 cm rectangle, long enough to tie as a headband or around the neck.
There are as many ways to wear one as there are moods, but four styles remain particularly popular.
One piece of advice applies to every style: do not pull it too tight. A bandana should sit naturally and be tied loosely rather than stretched.
Paisley—often white against a red or blue background—remains the most popular pattern, followed by vintage, floral and graphic prints. Our bandanas take the opposite approach: a plain bandana is effortless to coordinate, allowing the colour to become the sole focus. Nothing more is needed.
Black, dark grey or navy blue slips easily into any look. A red, yellow or electric blue bandana draws the eye, particularly when worn in the hair, where the colour frames the face.
The same shades can be found across our beanies and snoods, allowing you to create a coordinated look from head to neck.
Both, without distinction. Our bandanas are unisex, and the way they are worn influences the overall look far more than the product itself.
A women’s bandana is often worn in the hair as a rolled headband or hair scarf, or tied closely around the neck with an open shirt. A men’s bandana is more often seen around the neck, tucked into the collar of a denim or casual jacket for a workwear-inspired look.
To complete the outfit, our mittens are available in women’s and men’s selections, in the same colour families.
A logo, name or date can be printed or embroidered onto a cotton square. With a knitted bandana, personalisation comes through the choices you make: the colour, the way you tie it and how you pair it with a beanie or beret in the same shade.
With thirteen colours available at the same price, it is also an easy gift to coordinate with the recipient’s wardrobe.
