Frequently asked questions

How should men wear a beret?

Traditionally, men wear the beret in a more understated way. It sits straight or tilted slightly towards the back, with the edge following the line of the forehead and no pronounced angle. This is how it has always been worn in South-West France.

That is not a rule. Tilted clearly to one side, it takes on the sharper character of a military beret. It is a matter of personal taste, not convention.

Only one thing remains constant: the edge creates the balance. Too low and it closes the eyes; too high and the beret appears to float. The right position is the one in which it stays in place without you having to think about it.

Which men’s beret should you choose from the collection?

Our men’s wardrobe is built around three main families:

  • The Basque beret, the most classic design: a flat crown, round shape and felted wool, defined by its line alone. It is the beret of South-West France and also the most understated.
  • The military beret: the same wool, but with a leather headband and a pronounced tilted position inherited from the uniform. A sharper look for those ready to embrace it.
  • Our fashion berets, with more distinctive volumes and finishes, for when the beret moves beyond being an accessory and becomes the piece that draws the eye.

How often you plan to wear it also matters. An everyday beret benefits from remaining understated and being made from a dense material that retains its shape season after season. A design chosen to create a particular look can carry a stronger colour: it comes out when you decide to wear it.

The best beret for a man is therefore not simply a question of design, but of frequency. The one you will wear most is the one you will forget you are wearing most quickly.

Is the beret reserved for a particular generation?

This is the question we hear most often, and the answer is no.

For a long time, the beret was associated with one generation because it was the last to wear it every day. That has not been the case for many years. The beret returned through fashion, artists and urban culture, and today it can be worn at twenty just as naturally as at seventy.

What changes is the look. A black beret worn straight with a structured coat has little in common with a colourful design set towards the back over a thick jumper. The same piece, two entirely different interpretations.

What should men wear with a beret?

A beret works particularly well with substantial fabrics. A wool coat, a tweed or checked jacket, raw denim: it holds its place without trying too hard. Paired with a grey roll-neck or a white shirt, it is enough to give structure to an understated look.

When it comes to colour, black or brown blends naturally into a winter wardrobe, while ecru or light blue brings a lighter feel to a transitional outfit. That is almost the only rule: the beret should look as though it has always belonged there.

There is no occasion reserved for wearing one. A beret works at the office beneath a coat, at the weekend with a jumper or while travelling, as it can be folded and slipped into a pocket without losing its shape. This is its advantage over a brimmed hat: it takes up only the space you allow it, and no more.

Beret or cap: which should you choose?

Both come from the same workshop and begin with the same material. Our caps are shaped like our berets, from a single piece without assembly seams, giving them the same suppleness and comfort. Neither feels tight nor leaves a mark.

The difference lies in the line. A beret covers the head while leaving the face completely unobstructed. A flat cap adds a peak and a horizontal line that gives greater structure to the face. A newsboy cap introduces more volume and a stronger character.

The choice is therefore about style rather than function. Many men own both and alternate between them according to their outfit and mood. Explore all our French-made caps for men.

Which beret size should a man choose?

There are two possibilities, depending on the design.

Some berets are available in several sizes, in which case your head circumference is essential. Measure it and refer to our size guide.

Other designs come in one size and adapt to the head circumference.

Each product page specifies the suitable head circumference range, material and price. This is where the final choice is made.
