Newsboy caps

More volume, less rigidity

The newsboy cap, known in France as the casquette gavroche after Victor Hugo’s character, is a cap with body. Rounder and fuller at the crown, it brings additional volume to the silhouette. Our designs are shaped from a single piece of French merino wool without assembly seams. Generous in volume yet supple, they can be folded or rolled before returning to their original line. Born on the streets of Paris and London around the turn of the 20th century, worn first by Parisian street boys and delivery workers before moving onto the cinema screen, the newsboy cap has retained something of its original rebellious spirit. Unisex, it now works just as naturally with a structured coat as with chunky knitwear. More than a fashion accessory, it is a piece designed to last and can be worn throughout the year.

Frequently asked questions

Newsboy or flat cap: what is the difference?

The volume, and the look it creates. A flat cap follows the line of the head. With its short peak and horizontal profile, it frames the face and draws its character from the precision of its line. It is an exact, understated shape.

The newsboy cap adds more material at the crown. Its fuller shape falls slightly towards the front, softening the forehead and creating a rounder silhouette.

Two different ways to create a distinctive look, nothing more and nothing less. Many of our customers own both and choose between them according to the day’s outfit.

Who does a newsboy cap suit?

Its volume works particularly well with narrow and elongated faces, bringing greater balance to the features. On a rounder face, simply wear it tilted slightly towards the back to reveal more of the forehead.

It also works very well with long or voluminous hair. Its generous shape leaves enough room without flattening the hairstyle. It is one of the few caps that can be put on without having to rearrange the hair.

How should you choose your newsboy cap?

Choosing a newsboy cap begins with choosing the material. A wool newsboy cap remains closest to our original craftsmanship, providing warmth and natural water resistance. A cotton newsboy cap offers a lighter alternative.

When it comes to colour, black or navy works almost anywhere, beige softens the silhouette and red makes a stronger statement.

How should you wear a newsboy cap?

Worn straight, it feels classic and almost vintage. Tilted slightly to one side, it becomes more relaxed. Pushed towards the back, it opens up the face and creates a more natural look.

It pairs particularly well with substantial materials such as wool, tweed, denim and leather. With a very understated outfit, it can become the only point of character, which is often enough.

The newsboy cap is unisex, with no difference in cut between designs worn by women and men. Explore our selections of women’s caps and men’s caps.

A newsboy cap that retains its shape

This is the natural question with a fuller shape: will it hold? Wool felt provides the answer. Dense and formed from a single piece without assembly seams, it retains its line without an internal structure or rigid lining.

The cap can be rolled up and placed in a pocket before returning to its original shape. As wool is naturally water-repellent, light rain will not deform it. This is a cap that moves through the seasons without losing its character.

For a very different silhouette, the baseball cap offers a more structured shape. Explore our baseball caps, all our French-made caps and our French berets, made in the same workshop.
