The traditional flat cap is made from tweed or woven wool, a firmer material that retains its shape through its weave and lining. This is the market standard, and it has its own qualities: a crisp drape, distinctive pattern and sharply defined line.
Our caps are made from merino wool felt, a material created through fulling rather than weaving. It feels softer, more supple and more matt. Shaped from a single piece without assembly seams, it retains its form without an internal structure or rigid lining. This makes it more comfortable throughout the day and allows it to be folded without damage.
Two approaches to the same shape, creating very different sensations both in the hand and on the head.
Almost everyone, which helps explain its longevity. Its horizontal line lengthens and adds structure, its short peak does not cast a shadow over the eyes, and its low profile remains understated whatever the outfit.
On a round face, wear it tilted slightly to create a diagonal line. On an angular face, position it straight: the clean edge echoes the features without making them appear harsher. The design is unisex, with no difference in cut, and appears in both our women’s caps and men’s caps selections.
The flat cap is sometimes confused with the Irish cap, which is actually closer to the newsboy cap because of its rounded shape. A flat cap retains a low, clean line without the characteristic volume of a newsboy design.
Choosing a flat cap begins with choosing from different materials. A merino wool flat cap remains the warmest option for winter, while a cotton flat cap provides greater lightness in summer.
When it comes to colour, black or navy remains the most versatile choice. Pink and burgundy create a more distinctive look. Men’s and women’s flat caps share the same cut; only the head circumference varies, accommodated through an adjustable one-size fit.
It belongs to two wardrobes at once, and that is its strength. With a wool coat and shirt, it brings the silhouette together and creates a more refined look. With jeans and chunky knitwear, it introduces a relaxed feel without appearing careless.
It is the easiest shape to adopt if you do not usually wear caps or hats. It does not transform the silhouette; it simply defines it. For a fuller look, explore our newsboy caps. For a more contemporary style, discover our baseball caps.
Wool felt does not fray or lose its shape when cared for without washing. It develops a patina, which is not the same as wearing out: the colour softens, the material moulds to the head and the cap gradually becomes your own.
As wool is naturally water-repellent, light rain remains on the surface without the need for fluorinated treatments or PFAS. Gentle brushing is enough to revive the material.
