Wool bandanas are available on the market in several different compositions. Cashmere, sometimes blended with silk, is the most luxurious: larger designs often sell for between €100 and €265. Wool and silk gains shine but provides less warmth. Acrylic imitates wool at a lower price, without offering the same breathability.
We chose merino wool: fine enough to remain lightweight around the neck, warm enough for winter and more resistant to friction than cashmere.
First, between seasons, when a scarf feels like too much but an open collar does not provide enough protection. This is when it proves most useful: enough fabric to keep out the chill, but not so much that you become too warm.
Then in winter, beneath a coat, where it keeps the neck warm without creating the volume of a snood or scarf.
And in the hair throughout the year, when only the colour matters.
A knitted bandana requires a slightly different approach from a cotton square.
Do not try to create a sharp fold. Roll the material rather than folding it and allow it to settle naturally. Keep the knot loose so that the knit retains its volume without becoming distorted.
Around the neck, a simple knot at the side is enough. At 115 cm long, the Laina leaves two ends falling across the chest. In the hair, roll it into a band and tie it at the back or on top of the head, depending on whether you want to reveal the face or create greater coverage.
Thirteen plain shades: black, dark grey, navy blue, Laulhère blue, sky blue, electric blue, botanical green, yellow, red, burgundy, pale pink, sand and light beige.
Muted shades such as sand, light beige and dark grey can be worn like a lightweight scarf. Vivid colours truly come into their own when worn in the hair.
Do not machine-wash it, as the fine merino knit could lose its shape. Treat stains locally using a slightly damp sponge and a little mild soap, then leave the bandana to dry flat and away from direct sunlight.
Avoid storing it while knotted. Unfold it so the knit can return to its original shape and air it after every wear. For further advice on caring for knitwear, consult the merino wool section of our care guide.
