Some berets have never been redesigned. We make them today as we did fifty years ago, using the same techniques and the same French merino wool. These are our traditional berets, designed to last a lifetime. They move through seasons and trends without losing their appeal and, above all, they remain permanently available: that is what makes them timeless. Made in our workshops in Oloron-Sainte-Marie, at the heart of the beret’s birthplace, these designs form an integral part of the Laulhère heritage. A timeless beret has no need to change.
Its flat, round shape answers a simple requirement: covering
the head with a single seamless piece of felted wool.
The solution was found in the Pyrenees centuries ago,
and no one has improved upon it since.
This is the defining quality of objects that have found their
definitive form: there is nothing left to take away.
A coat can be redesigned every year because it has seams,
pockets and a length that can be adjusted. A beret has none
of these things. There is only one piece of wool, a diameter
and a head.
French merino wool does the rest.
It allows the shape to hold without any internal structure,
year after year, and makes possible the promise of
a beret designed to last a lifetime.
We may evolve the colours and finishes, but never the line.
Years later, a customer can find exactly the same beret they
once wore, made in the same shape and from the same wool.
This also means changing nothing else: not the wool,
not the templates and not the way the beret is made.
Few workshops are still willing to accept this constraint,
and it is what separates a historic design from a reissue.
What distinguishes a timeless beret from a seasonal design?
A
seasonal design
begins with a particular intention: the colour of the year,
a material of the moment or a shape inspired by contemporary
style. It has a beginning and an end, and rightly so.
A timeless design follows the opposite logic. It was not created
for a particular season, so there is no reason for it ever to
leave the collection. It is not chosen because it is new,
but because it has long since ceased to be new.
In practical terms, this can be seen in three things:
its shape remains unchanged from one year to the next,
the design stays in the collection, and it can still be worn
ten years later without looking dated. Both have their place
in a wardrobe. One evolves; the other remains.
Which timeless beret should you choose?
The choice comes down to three simple criteria:
The crown diameter comes first.
It determines the volume: a smaller crown stays close to
the head and feels more understated, while a larger crown
creates more drape on one side and gives the silhouette
greater presence. This is the main visible difference
between our designs.
The headband finish comes next.
Some berets are finished with leather, others with grosgrain.
Leather adds character and provides a firmer fit, while
grosgrain remains softer and more understated.
The colour comes last.
Black, navy or ecru works with almost everything and can be
worn without a second thought. Red, vivid blue or a rarer
shade becomes the accessory that sets the tone.
What should you wear with a timeless beret?
Anything. A black beret with a smaller crown works just as
naturally with a suit as it does with jeans. It does not change
the tone of the outfit; it simply follows it.
This is a rare quality in a fashion accessory. A brimmed hat
creates one kind of look, while a cap creates another.
A timeless beret imposes nothing. It works in the city or
the countryside, with a wool coat or a workwear jacket,
in winter or during the transitional seasons.
It is also why one beret can be enough and remain part of
a wardrobe for years. An accessory that works with everything
does not need to be constantly replaced.
